68,995 divorce cases of discord and 6611 divorce divorce cases in just one year
Statistics from the Ministry of Justice confirmed that the courts of appeal recorded 20,372 divorce cases in Morocco during the year 2020, while the first instance courts recorded 68,995 divorce cases for discord only, while the number of agreed divorce cases reached 24,257 cases, and khula divorces 6611 cases.
This rise in divorce cases in Morocco is due to the increase in the number of complaints lodged by women with the Public Prosecution Office in various Moroccan courts against the violence they have been subjected to, reaching 64,251 complaints during 2020, distributed between 53,552 regular and 10699 electronic ones. An increase in divorce cases was also noted. Related to complaints of family neglect, which amounted to 4,271 complaints, and cases of expulsion of women from their homes, to 836.
Figures confirm the upward curve in divorce cases in Morocco, especially since the period coincided with the Corona pandemic, and the accompanying home isolation, and problems related to the loss of many individuals to their sources of income, which negatively affected their ability to meet the requirements of living, as requests for marital separation increased. The lawyer in the Rabat Authority stressed that there are indirect causes for the instability of the family, which are mainly of a social, economic and cultural nature. For both spouses, which leads to a spasm of the marital relationship, and early or not based on strong or familial marriages end in divorce, so more legislative codification should be put in place, and programs to sensitize and raise awareness of the importance of the institution of marriage.
Professor Almo stresses the need to include family education in educational curricula, in his belief that divorce causes severe damage to society, and instability in families, which results in other social phenomena for children such as crime, school wasting, prostitution and addiction... all of them are serious pests that contribute to obstructing the developmental path. economic for any society.
